In the refiner’s fire, the things that don’t really matter fade away and what is truly important remains. You are never the same once you’ve gone through the refiner’s fire--your priorities are different, your attitude is different, and your love is different.
Your love is different because it’s not just your love anymore; it’s your love which has been refined and purified and strengthened by God. And by the power of the Holy Spirit, you ARE capable of loving like Joseph loved; like him, you are transformed into a vessel of God’s love--a vessel of strong, enduring, resilient Godly love.

But I can tell you this much: hate is not the answer. Anger is not the answer. Bigotry and prejudice are not the answer. And responding solely out of fear is never, ever the answer.
Those are the values of Pilate’s kingdom, not Christ’s kingdom. Hate and anger and bigotry is how the world responds when something bad happens. But we are supposed to be different that that; God has set us apart from the world and made us holy unto him. We are his hands and feet in this world, to love people as Jesus loves them.
And what do you think Jesus would be doing right now, if he was here on this earth? That’s what the reign of Christ is all about.

And when it comes right down to it, he says pain and suffering happen because they help us to better understand just how much Jesus loves us.
When you feel rejected, remember how much rejection Jesus suffered in his life and on the cross. When you feel lonely, remember how isolated Jesus felt from everyone else around him. When you feel betrayed, remember Jesus looking straight at Judas and telling him to go and do what must be done.
At any moment, at any second, Jesus could have thrown in the towel, skipped the death and resurrection part, and just ascended straight back to heaven, reclaiming the glory he had set aside and leaving us to fend for ourselves.
But he didn’t. He chose to suffer, knowing that we will suffer. He himself chose to suffer so that he can suffer along with us.

In the end, nothing else matters, Paul says, except knowing Christ my Lord. All the accomplishments, all the qualifications and all good works will simply fade away, sooner or later. But knowing Christ, that is eternal.
"I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead." (Philippians 3:10-11)

To be a servant is to not care what happens after we serve; the act of serving itself is enough, the act of loving is enough. No reward is necessary; no benefit or advantage to us is needed. It’s not about our own interests but rather the interests of others. It’s enough to know that our service pleases God.
