Sermon excerpt:
The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once wrote in his journal, “Life must be understood backwards. But … it must be lived forwards.”[i]
The life of faith is a careful balance of remembering God’s divine interventions and deliverances in the past while discerning God’s will for the future in our own lives.
And the good news is that we have the stories of Scripture with its countless Ebenezers to remind us of God’s past help and faithfulness. And we have a hymnal full of songs and Ebenezers raised up in times of difficulty and trials.
Even the cross of Christ is itself an Ebenezer, perhaps the ultimate Ebenezer, a constant reminder of the depth and breadth of Jesus’ love for us that caused him to make the ultimate sacrifice to deliver us, his own lost sheep, prone to wander as we are.

Sermon title "What Does This Mean?"
The question for us is the same as it was that day: what does this mean?
More specifically, what does it mean for us to learn to speak the language of those outside our building? Instead of expecting others to learn our language, how can we learn theirs instead?
How can we speak and act in a way that creates a sense of welcome for those who are strangers in a strange land, those who have been hurt by the church and are afraid to try again?
How can we speak and act in a way that is like a beam of light piercing through someone’s darkness?
How can we become home for people who are searching for a place to call home, people who have never known the safety of a home before?
What new language would we have to learn?
What beloved things would we have to give up?
What new challenges would we have to take on?
What are we willing to do so that those who are outside the building would feel welcome inside?

Sermon excerpt:
You’d think, based on what Luke said earlier, that Jesus would have pointed to the fig trees and other trees and talking about the leaves falling off as winter approaches, a sign of barrenness and death.
But here, he points directs our attention to the trees which are sprouting new leaves in the summer time. It’s a sign of life, new life even, which is a reflection of God’s kingdom.
Two very different signs, both full of truth. It’s the double-edge of Advent: the second coming of Jesus will bring a season of judgment and death and barrenness … but also a season of salvation and new life in Christ.
